A very special day led by 2 distingished Norfolk wool crafters using our very own Hungry Hill Norfolk Horn wool. This workshop forms a taster session for our more in depth wool craft workshops planned for 2027 and will combine the history, folklore and magic of wool with a practical introduction to spinning and weaving.
In the morning, you'll make a simple thread by teasing wool from a lock of Norfolk Horn fleece, before learning about carding and making your own drop spindle. Then using your drop spindle, you'll have the chance to practice a simple spinning technique, creating a longer yarn, then you’ll make a nine knot charm.
After lunch, you'll set up your own simple weaving piece to get a taste of the weaving process. You'll work on a small frame loom which has the benefit of being lightweight, compact and portable as well as intuitive for beginners. After warping your loom up you'll select from a range of natural yarns including our own Norfolk Horn yarn. We'll look to the colours of the landscape around us for inspiration in our weaving.
Along the way, there'll be tales of Frigga and Isis, Penelope, the Lady of Shallot and more. We'll tell you about the Fates, the magical meaning of warp and weft and how weaving features in mythology.
Val is the author of a number of books, including Chalk & Flint – A Way of Norfolk Magic, Bounded in a Nutshell and Hallowtide – A Dark Devotional. She is a much loved regular speaker at our Big Norfolk Sky Women’s Camps and practices as a medical and magical herbalist. Val lives in Norfolk and loves sharing her enthusiasm for the county’s plants and creatures and for the magic which thrives in this sacred landscape.
Ruth is an artist having adventures in landscape, motherhood, creativity and living simply. She founded the We Are Witch project and is a cornerstone of our Big Norfolk Sky Women’s Camps, overseeing the wonderful creative and crafting elements of our gatherings. Ruth’s passion for the ancient crafts and outstanding artistic talents find her involved in numerous earthy, authentic and magical projects.

Important Information
You’ll spend the morning in our beautiful Stargazer bell tent, tucked away in rural north Norfolk, surrounded by meadow, woodland, magpies and hares.
Throughout the workshop, there’ll be step by step guidance and support from Val and Ruth who'll create an atmosphere of fun, learning and discovery.
All materials are provided. You'll need to bring your own chair to sit on. Our site has parking and toilets.

The cost for this magical and unique experience is £135 per person (15% discount for returning Soulcrafters). Bookings must be made by Friday 2nd October and course fees are non-refundable, as materials will be pre-purchased,
