Plant & Slavic Wish Dolly Making with Aleksandra of Britten's Botanicals

About

Have you ever wondered how people fashioned the first toys? People used natural materials, readily available to them around the house and garden. The dollies were made to bring good luck, help to protect your loved ones, your home and to ward off the evil. Plants and medicinal herbs were often used to enhance the meanings, intentions and stories contained in the figures.

Join us in this creative, fascinating workshop to learn how to make traditional dollies from plants, herbs and upcycled fabric.

This Plant and Slavic Wish Dollies Making Workshop takes inspiration from Slavic folk dollies called Motanka where old fabric and plants are folded and tied together, no stitching involved. We will get imaginative and learn how to make benevolent folk dollies which help create a form of affirmation or projection into the future.

Britten’s Botanicals is dedicated to learning about local plants, how to treat them with respect and get to know their stories and uses, and how to preserve and incorporate them into our lives and diet. All of us deserve to get closer to nature and see the positive effects it has on our wellbeing. Workshops are led by Aleksandra who learnt first-hand how to rely on homegrown preserves and remedies and then travelled extensively gathering wisdom along the way.
